Coastal Survival training course tips

What would you do if you were stranded on a deserted island after a shipwreck or plane crash?
Do you have the skills necessary to build a fire, a shelter and to find food?

On this coastal survival course, you will be taken to a remote beach in Phang Nga Bay with your survival instructor. You will have a small survival kit that contains all of the absolute necessities to both survive and to be rescued.

This is a two-day survival course designed to teach you self-reliance through a positive relationship with the natural setting. You’ll learn how to get along with what Nature has to offer.

Life is full of risks. Which ones are acceptable in a survival situation and which ones should be avoided? Survival mistakes tend to follow patterns. You will learn how to avoid the most common mistakes in survival situations. Your most important asset is your mind. A big survival kit with everything imaginable is nice, but in a true survival situation, you are often left with almost nothing. You will learn to tap into your survivor’s mentality... you will find your primitive survival mind.

Coastal Survival Training

Coastal survival trainingThe terrain is rugged, uncomfortable and challenging. The beach is small and the jungle is thick. You are not expected to have to put up with biting insects or to sleep on the ground, but you will be uncomfortable at times most likely.

You will receive survival kit and a backpack. The survival kit contains everything you will need to survive including (but not limited to) fire-making tools, Water purification tablets, snare wire, fishing hooks and line, a compass, signaling mirror, plastic sheet and a knife.

The backpack will contain a small shelter, bedding, a canteen, food, insect repellent and other items to make camping more comfortable. Although you will learn how to build a basic jungle shelter, you won't have to spend the night in it. As far as picking wild edible plants go, we would not pick any plant that is uncommon or rare. Rare plants will be pointed out, but not eaten. In other words, we’d only sample plants that are very common and that are capable of rapid regrowth. Luckily for you, there are many plants that fall into this last category. You’ll get to eat some food directly from this tropical jungle. We do not kill any animals on this course. You will learn how to trap animals, but you will not actually do it.

If you're on a budget, you can choose a two-day budget jungle survival course in Phang Nga Province. This is mountainous terrain and rather challenging. This course along with the Phang Nga Bay course can be combined to get you ready for both of these very different habitats.

Check out our YouTube videos on survival skills. This one is about the Thai Jungle Knife, as used on Dual Survival "Bitten" episode of Season 2. Here is one about making a bamboo floor. This one is about a bamboo fire saw. Here is one about the wild edible plants that are in my yard in Phuket.

Highly recommended reading - Deep Survival, Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales. This book deals primarily with the psychology of survival with plenty of real-life stories. It points out certain (often repeated) patterns in many failed survival attempts and how these patterns of failure can be avoided.

We concentrate on honing our safety sense, outdoor skills and getting certified to international standards.
