There are a few nice hiking trails on Phuket, but there are a lot more trails in the next province to the north of Phuket in the jungle around Phang Nga Town.
The jungle in Phang Nga Province is as lush as any jungle in Thailand! The hiking in this region definitely rivals Khao Sok National Park. The only thing that Khao Sok offers that Phang Nga doesn’t is an abundance of large mammals. The flora in Phang Nga is just as stunning and so is the variety of birds and smaller animals. Check out these images from Phang Nga Province.
Paddle Asia offers trails of varying degrees of difficulty. The trails in Phang Nga range from easy strolls to very challenging mountain climbs. Here is a video of one of the more challenging waterfall hikes. In fact, Phang Nga Province has a lot of waterfalls.
There are some extremely nice creek hikes. Hiking along creeks is both picturesque and relatively easy. The option of cooling off in the water is a big bonus.
Another very appealing aspect of these hiking trails near Phuket is that it only takes about an hour to get there from Phuket. Once across the bridge, it’s only 50-ish minutes to quaint Phang Nga Town. This authentic Thai town offers plenty of dining opportunities. The accommodations range from very basic and cheap to mid-range. There are some lovely guesthouses available.
All-in-all, if you’re looking to get off the beaten path and try a destination that isn’t featured in most guidebooks or travel-related websites, Phang Nga Province is just the ticket. It’s got everything.
