Fishing for food in a survival situation is a better option (usually) than hunting or going out and setting game traps. You don’t have to travel as far, you can often fish in the shade, you’re near water to cool down if it’s a hot day, and fishing is usually more productive than hunting.

For your survival kit fishing gear, I recommend putting a couple of Wooly Bugger flies in your kit. This is historically one of the most diverse flies available. All sorts of fish species are attracted to it.
A bit of line on a long bamboo pole will get this fly out to where the fish are located.
Survival fishing technique: Select small flies as small fish are much easier to catch than big fish.
Passive fishing technique: Once you’ve caught a fish, you can use the head and guts for your fish trap or bait for regular fishing or for trotline fishing.
BTW, I made this fly. 😉
