There are a lot of different tasty edible insect species in Thailand. You don’t need to be in a survival situation to enjoy them. Edible insects are often available in Thai markets.
Surprisingly, edible insects that are available at the market are not really cheap. They’re considered a bit of a delicacy. These are Bamboo Bores (image). They taste like popcorn!
If you’re new to eating insects, don’t be afraid. They’re not gross and they don’t tend to have a strong flavor. They take on the flavor of whatever you cook them with. They are also not ‘gooey’ if you fry them thoroughly.
Grasshoppers and crickets are good insects to try first. Bamboo Bores are my personal favorite. They taste a bit like popcorn!
Insects are packed with nutrients. Most are at least 20% protein. They tend to be fairly high in fat, so you’ll get the necessary calories in a survival situation. Insects have decent amounts of minerals in them as well.
